This is a course for students who are new to their chosen major area of study. It is designed to allow students to develop and apply advanced skills and understandings of contemporary practices in their field while developing and extending their critical, analytical, and creative knowledges and experiences through interdisciplinary engagement with allied fields of media, creative arts, and social inquiry. Students will develop specialist practical and professional skills orientated towards professional or creative engagement in fields of their chosen major. They will also gain analytical, collaborative, and problem-solving skills through the critically informed practice of designing, planning, and producing a major project in the form of a creative production, portfolio work, report, or thesis. The course also provides opportunities for students to take internships in their respective fields and to demonstrate qualification for possible entry into Curtin University’s PhD program.The Professional Writing and Publishing (PWP) Major will equip students with the skills, understanding and discipline to work in corporate communications and media in state, federal and local government, business and industry, the not-for-profit sector, arts organisations, and the magazine and book industries. These areas continue to demonstrate a significant growth nationally and internationally. It is expected that the degree will attract students with a strong command of the English language from a range of undergraduate disciplines from not only Humanities but also science and health sciences. Students will learn to convey information, issues and debate to colleagues, clients, constituents, and stake-holders by creating narratives that are rhetorically effective, ethically aware, well-researched, and cogently argued, in a range of media, genres and forms including print and online media, features and profiles, speeches, reports, discussion papers, narrative nonfiction, and promotion writing. Uniquely, the Curtin PWP program integrates creative practice and academic inquiry with training and experience in real-world technical and professional skills and competencies. It aims to foster its students’ narrative nonfiction writing talents, developing their skills in storytelling whilst training them in the specialised genres and conventions of professional communication and delivering advanced instruction in research, writing, editing and publishing. This equips students to contribute to and influence public discourse which is increasingly being driven by narrative: stories that capture an organisation’s identity, aspirations, and endeavours. Students will undertake a major project in their second year of study. They will also have an opportunity to practice their skills and develop their portfolio through internship with a professional organization. Students with outstanding results will have an option to further strengthen their critical capacity in preparation for possible PhD study.

This subject allows students to develop advanced writing techniques and creative artefact planning skills  through the production of a major piece of work for publication. It will also extend students’ knowledge about a range of writing genres and insights into the writing process. It exposes students to the many different approaches to the practice of writing by critically appraising a range of writing practitioners and published works. It will also further develop and apply critical, theoretical and reflective understandings through the frame of practice-led research to assist in the development of a student’s own folio of original work.

Continue the development of your writing folio. Complete the artefact and exegesis that you began in Writing and Praxis: Publication Folio A (PWR80005).Research a wide range of writing genres including crime, business and short story writing.

The Creative Artefact: Publication Folio B

Students will investigate the art of visual storytelling and explore a range of techniques for the creation of story elements such as structure, character, dialogue, adaptation and layout. The subject also explores how cultural and critical theories offer frameworks for understanding film, television and multimedia.

Learn the skills behind the scripts of your favourite films and productions, including structure, character, dialogue and more. Learn to critique genres and theoretical approaches – before lifting your pen and unleashing your inner scriptwriter.

Scriptwriting

In this subject, students will learn how to read, write and research a wide range of writing styles typical to those met in the degree of their work and/or life. Students will gain insight into different forms of professional writing, have access to professionals speaking about their particular form of professional writing, develop understanding of the relationship between professional writing style and target audience, and obtain skills in writing for different professional purposes.

Real Life Writing

In this practical introduction to creative non-fiction, students learn to research and write narrative non-fiction pieces such as the memoir, personal essay, travelogue, and environmental writing. We examine some of the great non-fiction essayists and analyse the local and international contexts in which these works are produced. This introductory unit is suitable for students from interdisciplinary backgrounds including creative writing, ethnography, cultural studies, journalism, philosophy and history. You devise your topics in consultation with the lecturer, and are guided in the development of skills in primary research and narrative writing techniques.

Writing Creative Non-Fiction - An Introduction

The ability to strategically communicate is a skill required in many industries and sectors. In this subject, you are introduced to a variety of media platforms and approaches to provide a strong foundation for participation in the media and communication industries. You will be introduced to key trends and changes in contemporary media practices, technologies, business models and audience behaviours. A fundamental appreciation of key concepts in media writing will enable you to think strategically about content creation, information gathering and audience engagement, which will equip you to write and pitch a story to a relevant publication. You will gain a deeper understanding of how strategic communication can drive change in a variety of contexts while acquiring important practical skills in professional communication, information management, media engagement and publicity.

Introduction to Strategic Communication

Develop an understanding of Practice-led Research as it applies to the development of a writing folio. In this subject, you will explore the approaches and methodologies of Practice-led Research and investigate the components of studio-based practice and research. The subject will deepen your understanding of the importance of reflective practice and reflexivity for writers involved in Practice-led Research. It will give you an understanding of how the planning process can assist the creation of, and problem solving for, the production of a major piece of writing. The development of a folio of work, including artefact and exegesis, begins in this subject and is continued in Folio B.

Writing and Praxis: Publication Folio A

This subject lets you explore the key ideas around the identity and creative practice of the writer, including notions of the ‘writerly self’, current understandings of creativity and the relationship between subjectivity and reflection. This subject encourages you to reflect deeply and critically on the nature of your writing and to consider a range of methodologies that can help you map your development as a writer.

This subject focuses on the relationship between literary theories and how we write. It guides students through the production of a piece of writing that employs a theoretical lens of the student’s choice.
