International Human Rights Law and Practice

This course provides an introduction to the politics of international organisations and international law from the perspective of the International Relations (IR) discipline, with a specific focus on peace and conflict. More specifically, it aims to introduce students to i) the main IR approaches to studying international organisations and law and the key debates surrounding them ii) some of the most influential international organisations and legal frameworks and how they operate and iii) central issues pertaining to international law, norms and organisations in the areas of peacekeeping, conflict prevention and human rights. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 2019IBA Politics of International Law &amp; International Organisations, 2019GIR Politics of International Law and Organisations or 2019GIR International Organisations, Peace and Conflict.

International Organisations, Peace and Conflict

This subject measures the ideal of democracy against its capacity to deal with the diversity of the people. You will lstudy how different identities based on class, gender, sexuality, race (among others) articulate, negotiate and contest their place and (mis)representation in democratic life. You will study the heritage of the concept of democracy in relation to its concrete manifestations in nation states, and compare how the democratic ideal of living together in a political community is debated in various contexts. Topics include: sovereignty and Indigenous politics; free speech, censorship and political correctness; the gendered, sexualised and racialized character of culture wars and social change; religious expression and secularism; political activism, civil disobedience and violence; law and justice; and discourses of human rights. Texts include legal documents, petitions, government papers, propaganda, various media, and academic writings.This is a level 3 subject. Diversity Democracy Dissent

Human rights are fundamental rights that are inherent to every individual. They are underpinned by concepts of human dignity and the essential equality of all people. The subject takes an interdisciplinary approach to the development, application and cultural relativity of human rights, and how they are placed alongside our notions of global justice.The subject is delivered in three modules. The first module explores the evolution of the liberal conception of human rights, with a focus on how the understanding of rights has changed over time. The second module introduces students to non-Western conceptions of human rights, with a focus on indigenous conceptions. The third module discusses who guarantees protection of rights, and how violators of rights have come to be punished in the international system. The material covered in this subject is global in both its geographic scope and its cultural awareness. The subject will provide you with the tools to make determinations about the nature of human rights in a globalised world.

U.S. historian William H. Chafe has called the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s “the most significant social movement in all of American history.” The aim of this subject is to explore in detail the central protests and demonstrations of this important movement. Our chronology will largely concentrate on the period from the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision through to the 1968 Poor Peoples’ Campaign. The subject, however, will also assess major changes in race relations since 1968, especially in the light of ongoing racial divisions in the United States. These divisions have been highlighted by the recent Black Lives Matter protests, which also illustrate the international reach of U.S. civil rights histories. Students will explore how the American civil rights movement was influenced by global events and how it inspired other protest movements, in the U.S. and beyond. They will also examine how a mass movement mobilises successfully, identifying the circumstances under which non-violent direct action is successful. In the process, they will assess the key role of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.This is a level 3 subject. The study of human rights raises some of the most important issues in Australia and the world. Within the context of international legal relations, this online subject will help you to develop a broad understanding of the underlying principles, structure, institutions and vocabulary of human rights as complemented by national law. You will explore a range of contemporary human rights topics and issues including the origin, content, nature, scope and implementation of human rights, as well as human rights protection in the UN system and regional systems and prohibition of discrimination. Additionally, you may also examine minority rights, human rights and terrorism, human rights and the environment, and Australia and human rights. You will be encouraged to develop your critical thinking and legal analysis skills by reflecting on contemporary human rights issues, including the effectiveness and impact that human rights law has on society.

Human Rights

The subject explores the historically evolved norms and laws as they relate to atrocity crimes and global justice issues, including slavery, climate change, migration and refugees, and labour exploitation. The subject provides a framework by which to understand why the justice issues identified in this subject were, at various times in times in modern history, tolerated, and how they have in time become taboo. In turn, the subject explores the opportunities for, and barriers to, solving these justice issues in a globalised world.

Justice was once thought to be culturally specific; so no general standard of justice applied.  Both the idea of an inborn sense of justice and gloabalization have played important roles in the development of a general (global) idea of justice.  A concern with global justice often focuses on unjust treatment of people of non-western countries by people from western countries.  Both international aid and the various forms of security are affected by the idea of and demands for global justice.

This subject is an introduction to Gender Studies, an interdisciplinary field that analyses gender and how it intersects with sexuality, race, class, different abilities, and other identities. We establish foundational knowledge of and key concepts in how gender has been theorised and debated through exploring grassroots gender liberation activism including feminism, gay liberation, and the trans and intersex movements.

Unearth new ways of thinking about femininity and masculinity. Read up on male and female representation throughout the literary canon. Address abortion and reproductive rights. Highlight historical and contemporary examples of sexism in the media.

This subject poses questions about the origins, the evolution, and the nature of the emerging global human rights order. Are human rights the product of a peculiarly European heritage? What was the relationship between French revolutionary declarations of rights and the ensuing terror? How has the language of rights been used by socialists, feminists, imperialists, anti-slavery campaigners and national liberation movements? How have notions of human rights been influenced by the legacy of the holocaust, the Cold War, decolonisation, the sexual revolution, the war on terror, and the rise of authoritarian great powers? Within a historical framework, the subject examines the interplay of ideas, civic activism, politics, and diplomacy. In the process, you will have an opportunity to evaluate the ideas of proponents and critics of universal rights, the different ways that states have responded to human rights, and the new pessimism that surrounds the prospects of human rights.This is a level 2 subject. This subject considers various approaches to understanding the relationship between law, rights, and social justice. It focuses on how domestic and international laws can promote, hinder, or violate rights and asks critical questions about the nature and source of those rights. The subject begins by examining the philosophy and practice of rights, including within domestic and international law, and then considers the relationship between rights and various social justice issues. These include Indigenous self-determination; women&#39;s political movements; ableism; children&#39;s rights; discrimination against LGBTIQ people; poverty and homelessness; asylum seeking; counter-terrorism and torture; armed conflict, genocide and transitional justice; and environmental and animal justice.This is a level 3 subject.
