This subject addresses the question &quot;What is it about individuals and their experiences that produce criminal behaviour?&quot;. Psychologists are concerned with how an individual’s biological make-up, personality, upbringing, current circumstances and so forth produce criminal behaviour. The unit examines criminal behaviour in terms of nine theoretical perspectives: evolutionary theories, genetic theories, biobehavioural theories, psychodynamic theories, trait theories, behavioural theories, social learning theories, development theories, and environmental theories. The unit also examines the implications of these theories for three areas criminology: the functioning of the criminal justice system, crime prevention, and the rehabilitation of offenders.

Psychological Explanations of Criminal Behaviour

This course introduces the principles, approaches and methods of criminal investigation and intelligence work. This subject explores the historical, sociological and criminological context of youth justice. This is a field that offers particular challenges for both criminal and social justice. Links are established between youth justice and the various agencies established to work with the young. Particular attention is given to the skills, knowledge and interpersonal strategies required to work with and support young people in the criminal justice field. Consideration is given to legislation governing approaches to young people and crime.Youth justice is an area of the criminal justice system that has experienced considerable change and upheaval in recent years - although some might claim that such changes are more apparent than real. Nevertheless, it does seem that much of the theory and practice of ‘diversionary’ and ‘restorative’ approaches which are being introduced across the broad field of criminal justice, initially have grown out of critical concerns about the treatment and welfare of young offenders.This subject attempts the fairly demanding task of providing students with both an understanding of the socio-historical and criminological dimensions of youth justice as well as providing them with a broad understanding of the skills and competencies needed to work with young people. It does not intend to produce graduates who will be equipped to move straight into employment as youth workers. Rather, it forms a solid basis for those who might wish to train further in youth work, and it acknowledges that many graduates in criminology and criminal justice will in their professional lives find themselves interacting with young people and the youth justice system.Specific examples in the course refer to Queensland, however, the broad features discussed apply Australia-wide. Students are encouraged to explore practices in their own localities.

Youth Justice

Victimology

This subject provides you with a rigorous overview of harmonisation of domestic crimes and criminal procedures as well as international crimes and criminal procedures. The particular focus on harmonised crimes, such as terrorism and related proceedings, encourages critical analysis of a range of international criminal law concepts and principles. You will also develop your understanding of specific supranational crimes, such as crimes against humanity, aggression, war crimes and related proceedings, as well as consider the fundamentals of the international law of war.

International Criminal Law

Drawing on the Australian context, this course examines the contemporary and historical significance of Indigeneity in structuring patterns of law making, offending, victimisation, criminal justice system responses and experiences; and considers new forms of crime prevention and innovative justice practices. Emerging issues relating to ethnicities, crime, victimisation and the criminal justice system will also be addressed.In Australia there is on-going public and governmental concern for the recognition of Indigenous peoples rights and, more recently migrant and other culturally diverse groups. Crime control policies/programs and operation of the Australian criminal justice system are frequently critiqued for being inequitable, intolerant and ignorant towards Indigenous peoples and also ethnic minorities. It is essential that students of criminology and criminal justice have an understanding of how Indigeneity and ethnicities impact crime, victimisation and the criminal justice system. The purpose of this course is to provide students with the foundation from which they can begin to develop this understanding.

Race, Crime and Justice

This subject explores the major sociological theories of punishment, and it examines the intended and unintended social and psychological consequences of imprisonment. Variation in the experience of institutions of criminal justice, especially prison, is explored with reference to social relations and classifications of gender, race-ethnicity, age, and mental health.This subject surveys the major analytical interpretations of punishment and sentencing. Case studies are used to provide applied examples of the distinctive questions that various theoretical perspectives pose, summarise major interpretive themes, and identify the kinds of insights social theory has to offer for the understanding of particular examples of modern penality and changes that have occurred in this field.

Punishment, Justice and Reform

This course explores the intersections between law and psychology. Examine the role of psychology in criminal justice processes, focusing on policing and the court system. Cover a broad range of topics such as investigative psychology, deception, eyewitness research, expert evidence, and jury and judicial decision making.
